A. A Dinner Invitation

Wang Hong is studying for her PhD in America. She is working in the same lab with her friend Carl Cooper.
Cooper: Hey, Wang. I hear you just had a paper published. I'd like to take you out tomorrow evening to dinner to celebrate. How about it?
Wang: Oh, no. That's really not necessary. Why don't you come over and have dinner with me?
Cooper: I wouldn't hear of it. On my birthday you made me the best Chinese dinner I've ever had. I'm not much of a cook myself, but it would give me great pleasure to take you out to eat. You may choose any kind of food you'd like.

B. How About Some American Food?

Wang: What do you mean "any kind of food"?
Cooper: Our country's made up of people from all over the world, so we have great cooking from all over the world. We can eat Italian, French, German, Japanese — you name it, and we've got it. Or we can even go down to Chinatown for a good Chinese dinner if you'd like.
Wang: How about some American food? But not too expensive. An expensive place would make me uncomfortable.
Cooper: OK. We'll go to a nice little place I know where you can get some plain, old-fashioned American cooking.
Wang: Great. I will pick you up at your office about 5. OK?
Cooper: Good. See you tomorrow at 5.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Olson,

We are having an informal dinner at our home on Saturday, May 21st, at 6 p.m., and would love to have you join us. As you know, Prof. and Mrs. Harvey Taylor have just returned from China, and they will be sharing some of their experiences with us then. Since you knew the Taylors before they left Boulder, we thought you might enjoy visiting with them again.
My husband and I have heard of your work of finding host families for international students at the University, and would like to get to know you better. We hope it will be possible for you to be with us.
